What Thung Nham actually is

Thung Nham โ€” literally "submerged cave" โ€” is a limestone valley about 12km west of Tam Coc in the Ninh Binh (๋‹Œ๋นˆ / ๅฎๅนณ / ใƒ‹ใƒณใƒ“ใƒณ) area. The site covers roughly 300 hectares of karst forest, caves, and a wetland that serves as a roosting ground for an estimated 40,000-50,000 birds across 40-plus species. Herons, egrets, cormorants, and storks descend on the valley each evening in a noisy, chaotic spectacle that looks like a nature documentary playing out in real time.

The area was developed for tourism in the early 2010s but never attracted the same crowds as Tam Coc or Trang An. That works in its favor. You get the same dramatic karst scenery without the boat-queue frustration.

Why travelers go

Three reasons, in order of importance:

  1. The bird garden at dusk. Between 4:30-6:00 PM (varies by season), thousands of birds return to roost. It's genuinely impressive โ€” not in a manicured-zoo way, but in a loud, slightly chaotic, real-ecosystem way.
  2. Caves without the tour-group crush. Thung Nham has several cave systems (Vai Gioi, But, Ba Co) that you can walk through at your own pace.
  3. A slower alternative to Tam Coc/Trang An. If you've already done the boat rides and want something different in the Ninh Binh area, this fills a half-day easily.

Best time to visit

May through October is peak bird season. The colonies are largest, the vegetation is dense green, and sunset comes late enough that you're not rushing. The tradeoff: it's hot (34-38ยฐC) and afternoon rain is common. Bring a light rain jacket.

November through February still has birds, but numbers drop and some migratory species have moved on. The upside is cooler weather (15-22ยฐC) and fewer domestic tourists.

Avoid major holiday weekends โ€” Tet and the April 30 / May 1 break โ€” when domestic tour groups fill the paths.

How to get there from Ninh Binh city

Thung Nham is about 12km from Ninh Binh city center and 3km past Tam Coc pier.

  • Motorbike (recommended): 20-25 minutes. The road from Ninh Binh through Tam Coc village is paved and well-signed. Rental bikes run 120,000-150,000 VND/day from most hotels.
  • Grab/taxi: Around 80,000-120,000 VND one way. Getting a return ride can be tricky after 5 PM โ€” arrange a pickup time or keep your driver's number.
  • Bicycle: Doable if you're staying in Tam Coc (3km, flat road). From Ninh Binh city it's a longer 12km ride, mostly flat with one gentle hill.

If you're coming from Hanoi (95km), take a Limousine van from My Dinh or Giap Bat to Ninh Binh (2 hours, 100,000-150,000 VND), then continue by motorbike or taxi.

What to do โ€” 5 specific things

1. Watch the bird return at the observation deck

Get to the viewing platform by 4:30 PM at the latest. The birds come in waves โ€” first the egrets, then the herons, then the cormorants in messy V-formations. Bring binoculars if you have them. The platform is about a 10-minute walk from the main entrance area.

2. Boat ride through the flooded forest

A short sampan ride (included in the entrance ticket) takes you through a flooded forest area with submerged tree roots and limestone overhangs. It's about 20 minutes, quiet, and the boatwoman does the rowing. Not as dramatic as Trang An, but more intimate.

3. Walk through Vai Gioi Cave

The largest cave in the complex โ€” about 500m deep with decent lighting. Stalactites, a few Buddha shrines tucked inside, and mercifully cool air on hot days. Watch your head in the lower sections.

4. Hike the garden paths

A 2km loop trail winds through fruit orchards (jackfruit, longan, guava) and medicinal herb gardens. It's flat, shaded, and takes about 40 minutes at a relaxed pace. Good for stretching your legs between cave visits.

5. Climb to the panoramic viewpoint

A steep-ish stone staircase (about 15 minutes up) leads to a lookout over the valley. The view puts the karst landscape in context โ€” you can see how the limestone towers ring the wetland below. Best light in the late afternoon.

Where to eat nearby

Thung Nham has a basic restaurant inside the complex (rice plates, 50,000-80,000 VND), but the better food is back in Tam Coc village or along the road to Ninh Binh.

  • "Com tam" with goat meat ("de tai chanh"): Ninh Binh's signature dish is goat prepared multiple ways. Look for any restaurant with a goat on the sign along Trang An road. A full spread for two runs about 250,000-350,000 VND.
  • "[Bun cha](/posts/bun-cha-hanoi (ํ•˜๋…ธ์ด / ๆฒณๅ†… / ใƒใƒŽใ‚ค)-grilled-pork-noodles)" or rice noodle soup: Several small family-run places on the main Tam Coc strip serve solid bowls for 35,000-50,000 VND.

Don't eat dinner inside the park โ€” the food is overpriced and mediocre.

Where to stay

Most travelers base themselves in Tam Coc village (3km away) or Ninh Binh city (12km).

  • Budget (300,000-500,000 VND/night): Tam Coc has dozens of family-run guesthouses with clean rooms and rice-paddy views. Tam Coc Sunshine and Hung Homestay are reliable.
  • Mid-range (800,000-1,500,000 VND/night): Tam Coc Garden Resort and Nguyen Shack offer bungalow-style rooms with more space and better breakfast.
  • Splurge (2,000,000+ VND/night): Ninh Binh Hidden Charm Hotel in the city, or the newer boutique places along the Tam Coc road.

Practical tips locals would tell you

  • Entrance fee: 100,000 VND for adults (as of 2024). This includes the sampan ride and cave access.
  • Bring mosquito repellent. The wetland area breeds them, especially at dusk โ€” exactly when you want to be at the bird platform.
  • Wear closed shoes. The cave paths are slippery and the garden trails get muddy after rain. Flip-flops are a bad idea here.
  • Allocate 3-4 hours. Most people underestimate the size. Arriving at 2:00 PM gives you time for caves, the boat, and the bird viewing at sunset.
  • Combine with Tam Coc or Trang An โ€” do the boat ride in the morning, Thung Nham in the afternoon. That's a full Ninh Binh day sorted.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Arriving too late for the birds. If you show up at 5:30 PM, you'll miss the best waves and rush through everything else.
  • Coming at midday. The birds aren't there, the caves are fine but not worth the trip alone, and you'll bake in the heat.
  • Not bringing water. There's one drink stall inside and it's not always open. Carry at least a liter.
  • Expecting Trang An-level infrastructure. Thung Nham is simpler, less polished, and has fewer English signs. That's part of the appeal โ€” just know what you're getting into.

Practical notes

Thung Nham works best as an afternoon-to-sunset half-day paired with a morning at Tam Coc or the temples at Hoa Lu. If you have three days in the Ninh Binh area, it's an easy addition that most visitors skip โ€” and that's exactly why it stays quiet.
