Da Lat has a reputation for romanticized dining β fondue spots, strawberry crepes, wicker chairs overlooking the valley β but the city also has an unglamorous, genuinely good cheap-food scene that most visitors walk straight past. If you know where to look, 50,000 VND gets you a full, satisfying meal, not just a snack.
Breakfast: Start Under 30,000 VND
The morning circuit around Cho Da Lat (λ¬λ / ε€§ε» / γγ©γγ) (Da Lat Market) is the best place to start. The covered wet market on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai opens around 6 a.m., and the stalls along its eastern flank serve "banh uot" β steamed rice sheets draped over pork mince and dried shrimp β for around 20,000β25,000 VND a plate. It's light, a little sticky, and pairs well with the chili fish sauce they ladle over the top.
For something more substantial, look for "bun bo Hue" on Phan Dinh Phung street. Da Lat's version is milder than the original from Hue β less lemongrass heat, a cleaner broth β but the bowls are generous and land at 35,000β40,000 VND. A few places open as early as 6:30 a.m. and run out by 9.
If you want the fastest, cheapest option: "banh mi" carts are everywhere and reliably cost 15,000β25,000 VND depending on fillings. The carts near Xuan Huong Lake on Tran Phu tend to do brisk morning business and stuff their rolls properly β pate, cold cuts, pickled daikon, coriander. Don't expect a sit-down experience; eat it walking.
Lunch: The Rice Plate Sweet Spot
"Com binh dan" β the Vietnamese equivalent of a cafeteria-style rice plate β is where the 50,000 VND budget works hardest. These are the places with trays of pre-cooked dishes displayed behind glass at the front: braised pork, stir-fried morning glory, fried eggs, pickled vegetables, fish in clay pot. You point at what you want, they pile it onto a mound of rice, and you eat at a plastic table.
The highest concentration of com binh dan spots in Da Lat is along Truong Cong Dinh and the side streets running off it toward the market. A two-dish plate with rice runs 35,000β45,000 VND. Three dishes pushes you close to 55,000 but you'll struggle to finish it. Go for the braised pork belly (thit kho) and whatever vegetable looks freshest β Da Lat's highland produce is genuinely better than what you get in the lowland cities.
Another solid lunch option is "banh canh" β thick, chewy noodles in a pork or crab broth. There's a low-key spot on Hai Thuong street that's been doing this for years, packed with locals between noon and 1 p.m., and bowls come in at 30,000β35,000 VND. No English menu, but pointing works fine.

Dinner: Night Market and Beyond
Da Lat Night Market (Cho Dem Da Lat), off Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, is tourist-facing but not a total rip-off if you pick carefully. Skip the novelty items β grilled corn dressed with cheese, etc. β and go for the "banh trang nuong" stalls. This is Da Lat's own thing: rice paper grilled over charcoal, topped with egg, spring onion, dried shrimp, and chili oil. One sheet feeds one person, costs 15,000β20,000 VND, and is worth every dong. Get two.
For a proper sit-down dinner under 50,000 VND, the streets around Phan Boi Chau have a cluster of family-run spots doing "com tam" β broken rice with grilled pork, a fried egg, and pickled vegetables. This is more of a Saigon staple, but it's traveled north convincingly. Plates here are 40,000β50,000 VND and come with a bowl of broth on the side.
If you want noodles at night, "hu tieu" is worth seeking out. It's lighter than most beef noodle soups β clear pork broth, thin rice noodles, a few slices of pork and shrimp β and fits neatly into the 35,000β45,000 VND range at most small shops around the market perimeter.

What Actually Gets You Value Here
A few honest observations after eating through this city on a budget:
- Follow the plastic stools. The more uncomfortable the seating, the better the price-to-quality ratio tends to be.
- Eat where the market vendors eat. The stalls inside the covered market building serve the people running the stalls around them. That's a reasonable quality filter.
- Avoid anything with an English-only menu near the lake. Prices jump 30β50% without any corresponding jump in quality.
- Da Lat's produce advantage is real. Even cheap com binh dan here uses better vegetables β the altitude means fresher greens, better-textured mushrooms, and strawberries that actually taste like something.
- Morning is the best time for value. Breakfast options give you the most volume per dong, and the freshest ingredients go into the first batches of the day.
Practical Notes
Most cheap spots in Da Lat are cash-only; carry small bills (5,000β20,000 VND denominations). The city is walkable in its core β the market area, Truong Cong Dinh, and Phan Dinh Phung are all within a 1.5 km radius β so there's no need to spend on transport to eat well. Expect prices to edge up slightly on weekends when domestic tourism peaks.
