What it is
Cho Noi Nga Bay — sometimes called Phung Hiep floating market — sits at the confluence of seven canals about 30 km southeast of Can Tho city center. For decades it was one of the largest wholesale floating markets in the Mekong Delta (메콩 델타 / 湄公河三角洲 / メコンデルタ), a chaotic intersection where boats loaded with pineapples, sugarcane, and "hu tieu" ingredients changed hands before dawn. The market technically falls in Hau Giang province (split from Can Tho in 2004), but most travelers base themselves in Can Tho and day-trip out.
Unlike Cai Rang — Can Tho (껀터 / 芹苴 / カントー)'s flagship floating market that now draws hundreds of tourists daily — Nga Bay remains a working wholesale hub. Fewer tour boats, more transaction. The trade has shrunk since road infrastructure improved, but on a good morning you'll still find 40-60 boats clustered at the junction, their bamboo poles hoisting samples of whatever's for sale: bunches of bananas, crates of pomelo, sacks of coconut.
Why travelers go
Three reasons. First, it's quieter — you won't be jostling with five other tourist boats for a photo angle. Second, the seven-canal geography means the boat ride itself is interesting: narrow waterways lined with coconut palms, stilt houses, and small-scale fish farms. Third, the surrounding Phung Hiep town has a proper local market on land with snakes, eels, and river fish laid out in ways you won't see in a city.
If you've already done Cai Rang and want a less curated version of delta commerce, this is the move.
Best time to visit
The market peaks between 4:30 AM and 7:00 AM. Arrive by 5:00 to catch the busiest trading window. By 8:00, most wholesale boats have dispersed.
Season-wise, the dry months (December through April) mean calmer water and less rain interrupting your boat ride. The fruit harvest peaks around June-August — more boats, more variety — but you'll get wet.
Avoid public holidays and the days just before Tet when many traders head home early.
How to get there
From Can Tho
The most common approach is hiring a private boat from Ninh Kieu Wharf in Can Tho. The ride takes about 1.5-2 hours downstream, which means you'd need to leave around 3:00 AM to catch the market's peak. Cost: 800,000-1,200,000 VND for a small motorboat (4-6 people). Some operators combine Cai Rang + Nga Bay in one morning loop — budget 4-5 hours total.
Alternatively, drive or take a motorbike 30 km south on National Road 1A toward Phung Hiep town (about 45 minutes), then hire a short boat ride from the local wharf for 100,000-200,000 VND. This is cheaper and lets you sleep later, but you miss the canal scenery.
From Saigon
Buses from Saigon to Can Tho run every 30 minutes from Mien Tay station, taking about 3.5 hours. Futa and Thanh Buoi are reliable operators, tickets around 150,000-180,000 VND. From Can Tho, follow the options above.

What to do
Watch the trading. Wholesale buyers pull alongside seller boats, negotiate briefly, and transfer crates of fruit by hand. The bamboo pole system — called "cay beo" — tells you what each boat sells without anyone shouting.
Eat on the water. Paddle-powered kitchen boats sell "hu tieu (후띠우 / 粿条 / フーティウ)" (the south's pork noodle soup), "banh canh" with crab, and black coffee poured over ice from a thermos. A bowl runs 20,000-30,000 VND. Flag down any boat with a charcoal stove.
Explore the canals. Ask your boatman to detour into the narrower tributaries. You'll pass fruit orchards, brick kilns, and families washing dishes off their front steps. This is where the seven-canal junction earns its name.
Visit Phung Hiep land market. If you arrive by road, the terrestrial market adjacent to the canal sells everything from live snakes to dried fish. It's gritty and unfiltered — not for the squeamish, but genuinely interesting.
Where to eat
Back in Can Tho after your early morning:
- Quan [Com Tam](/posts/com-tam-saigon (사이공 / 西贡 / サイゴン)-broken-rice) Thanh (30/4 Street): Broken rice with grilled pork chop — a proper "com tam" plate for 40,000 VND. Opens at 6:00 AM.
- Bun Rieu Cua 209 (De Tham Street): Crab-paste noodle soup, rich and tomatoey. A bowl costs 35,000 VND.
- Ninh Kieu night market: If you're staying through the evening, grilled "banh xeo (반세오 / 越南煎饼 / バインセオ)" stalls along the waterfront serve crispy crepes stuffed with shrimp and bean sprouts for 25,000-35,000 VND.
For vietnamese coffee (베트남 커피 / 越南咖啡 / ベトナムコーヒー), the string of cafes along Hai Ba Trung Street near the river pull decent cups from 18,000 VND.
Where to stay
Base yourself in Can Tho — Phung Hiep town has limited accommodation.
- Budget: Xin Chao Hostel (Ngo Quyen Street), dorm beds around 150,000 VND/night, decent Wi-Fi, free bike rental.
- Mid-range: Kim Tho Hotel (Hai Ba Trung Street), river-view rooms from 500,000 VND, central location near Ninh Kieu Wharf.
- Splurge: Azerai Can Tho, a converted rice-trading warehouse on Con Au island, doubles from 2,500,000 VND. Peaceful but 10 minutes from the wharf by shuttle boat.

Practical tips
- Bring a headlamp. If you're on a 3 AM boat departure, the wharf is dark and the boat floors are wet.
- Cash only. No card terminals on floating markets. Bring small bills (10,000-50,000 VND) for buying fruit or breakfast.
- Sunscreen + hat. Even at 6 AM the equatorial sun reflects hard off the water.
- Motion sickness. The boats are stable but diesel fumes in the cabin can get to people. Sit at the back, in open air.
- Negotiate boat price before boarding. Agree on the route, duration, and total cost. Get it written on the phone if your Vietnamese is limited.
Common mistakes
Arriving too late. Showing up at 7:30 expecting a vibrant market — you'll catch the tail end at best. Set that alarm.
Only doing Cai Rang. Many travelers skip Nga Bay entirely because it's further. If you have two mornings in Can Tho, do both; they're different experiences.
Expecting Cai Rang-level tourist infrastructure. There are no English-speaking guides waiting at Nga Bay wharf. Arrange everything in advance through your hotel or a Can Tho tour operator.
Overpacking the morning. Some combined tours rush Cai Rang + Nga Bay + fruit orchard + noodle factory into five hours. You'll spend more time on the boat than actually watching anything. Pick two activities max.
Practical notes
Nga Bay floating market is best treated as a half-day trip from Can Tho, paired with either a canal exploration or Phung Hiep's land market. It rewards early risers and travelers comfortable with less hand-holding. If your Mekong Delta time is limited to one morning, Cai Rang is the safer bet — but if you've got two days in Can Tho, Nga Bay shows you the delta before the tour buses found it.
