Thung Nham Bird Garden sits about 12 km from Tam Coc, tucked into a limestone valley where tens of thousands of birds roost at dusk. It's one of those places that doesn't photograph well on a phone but stays with you — the noise alone, thousands of storks and herons coming home at sunset, is something you won't get anywhere else in northern Vietnam (베트남 / 越南 / ベトナム).
What it is
Thung Nham (literally "submerged cave") is a 334-hectare ecological tourism area in Ninh Hai commune, Hoa Lu district, Ninh Binh (닌빈 / 宁平 / ニンビン) province. The core attraction is a wetland bird sanctuary home to around 40 species — mostly storks, herons, cormorants, and egrets — with a population that swells to over 50,000 birds during breeding season. The area also includes a network of caves, a small botanical garden, and boat routes through flooded karst formations.
The site opened to tourism around 2010. Before that, locals knew it as a place where birds gathered but access was rough. Now there's a ticket gate, paved paths, and electric boats — it's organized but not overdeveloped.
Why travelers go
Three reasons, honestly. First: the bird-watching at dusk is genuinely impressive. Second: it's a quieter alternative to Tam Coc or Trang An if you've already done those. Third: the cave system (But Cave, Vai Gioi Cave) offers a decent underground walk without the crowds of bigger Ninh Binh attractions. If you're spending two or more days in the area, Thung Nham fills a half-day nicely.
Best time to visit
The sweet spot is May through September. This is breeding and nesting season — bird numbers peak, and the evening return-to-roost spectacle is at its most dramatic. June and July are the busiest months for the birds themselves.
Within the day, arrive by 4:00 PM at the latest. The birds start coming back around 5:00–5:30 PM depending on the season. You want to be on the boat or at the observation point before they arrive, not scrambling through the ticket gate.
Winter months (November–February) still have birds, but significantly fewer. The landscape is greener after rains, but the main draw — that wall of sound and movement at sunset — is diminished.
How to get there from Ninh Binh city
From Ninh Binh city center, Thung Nham is about 12 km southwest — roughly 25 minutes by motorbike or car.
- Motorbike rental: 120,000–150,000 VND/day from most hotels. The road is straightforward — follow signs toward Tam Coc, then branch off at Ninh Hai. Google Maps handles it fine.
- Grab/taxi: Around 80,000–120,000 VND one way. Getting a return ride can be tricky since drivers are scarce near the park entrance after 5 PM. Arrange a round trip or have your hotel call ahead.
- Bicycle: Possible if you're staying in Tam Coc village (only 5 km away). Flat road, pleasant ride through rice paddies.
If you're coming from Hanoi, take any bus to Ninh Binh (2–2.5 hours, 80,000–100,000 VND from Giap Bat station), then arrange local transport.

What to do
Watch the birds come home
This is the main event. Electric boats (included in your ticket or a small surcharge depending on the package) take you through a waterway lined with dense vegetation to an observation area. From around 5:00 PM, birds start arriving in waves — storks first, then herons, then smaller species. The noise builds gradually until it's almost overwhelming. Bring binoculars if you have them.
Explore But Cave and Vai Gioi Cave
But Cave ("Buddha Cave") is the larger of the two — a walk-through cave with stalactites and some creative lighting. It's about 500 meters long. Vai Gioi Cave is smaller and less visited. Neither is world-class spelunking, but they're worth 30–40 minutes if you arrive early.
Boat ride through the flooded forest
Separate from the bird-watching boat, there's a route through submerged karst terrain — similar to Trang An but much shorter and far less crowded. The water is shallow and clear in dry season. About 20–30 minutes.
Walk the botanical garden
A paved loop through labeled fruit trees and medicinal plants. Honestly, it's filler — fine if you have time to kill before the birds arrive, skippable if you don't.
Climb to the panoramic viewpoint
A short hike (15 minutes, some steps) to a ridge overlooking the valley. Best in late afternoon light. Gives you a sense of the scale of the karst landscape surrounding Ninh Binh.
Where to eat nearby
Thung Nham itself has a basic restaurant inside the complex — fried rice, noodle soup, nothing memorable. Better to eat before or after in Tam Coc village or Ninh Binh city.
Two things worth seeking in the area:
- "Com chay" (burnt rice): Ninh Binh's signature dish — crispy rice crackers topped with stir-fried goat meat or vegetables in a savory sauce. Try it at any local restaurant along the Tam Coc tourist strip. Around 60,000–80,000 VND per portion.
- Goat meat ("de tai chanh"): Ninh Binh is famous for goat, typically served as lime-cured raw goat salad or grilled on hot stones. Restaurants on the road between Tam Coc and Ninh Binh city serve it well. A full goat spread for two runs 200,000–350,000 VND.
Where to stay
Most travelers base themselves in Tam Coc village (5 km away) or Ninh Binh city (12 km).
- Budget: Homestays in Tam Coc — 200,000–400,000 VND/night. Basic rooms, friendly hosts, bicycle rentals included at many.
- Mid-range: Hotels along Tam Coc's main road — 500,000–900,000 VND. Pool access, breakfast included, decent enough.
- Upscale: A few boutique places have popped up in the rice paddies around Tam Coc — 1,200,000–2,500,000 VND. Ninh Binh Hidden Charm and Tam Coc Garden are the better-known options.

Practical tips locals would tell you
- Buy the combo ticket (around 100,000 VND) that includes cave entry and the bird-watching boat. Individual tickets exist but the combo saves hassle.
- Mosquito repellent is non-negotiable, especially during the wet season evening hours. The wetland environment plus dusk equals aggressive mosquitoes.
- Wear long sleeves and pants — partly for mosquitoes, partly because the caves are cool and damp.
- Bring a headlamp or phone light for the caves. Lighting exists but some sections are dim.
- The park closes the ticket gate around 6:00–6:30 PM. You won't be kicked out mid-viewing, but don't arrive at 6.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Arriving too late: If you show up at 5:30 PM expecting to catch the birds, you'll spend your time in a boat queue instead of watching. Arrive by 4:00 PM.
- Visiting in winter expecting peak bird activity: You'll see some birds year-round, but if the spectacle is your reason for coming, time it May–September.
- Skipping Thung Nham because you've done Trang An: They're completely different experiences. Trang An is caves-from-a-boat tourism. Thung Nham is wildlife.
- Not arranging return transport: Seriously, the parking area empties out fast after sunset. Have a plan.
Practical notes
Thung Nham pairs well with a full Ninh Binh itinerary — Tam Coc or Trang An in the morning, Thung Nham in the late afternoon. Two full days in Ninh Binh gives you enough time to cover the major sites without rushing. The area is compact enough that you can base yourself in one spot and reach everything within 20 minutes.
