What it is
Thac Tinh Yeu β Love Waterfall β drops roughly 100 meters through dense subtropical forest in the Hoang Lien Son range, about 14 km from Sapa town center. It sits inside Hoang Lien National Park, fed by streams running off Fansipan's slopes. The name comes from a Hmong folk tale about two lovers separated by the mountain gods, though the version you hear depends on which guide tells it.
The waterfall was developed for tourism in the early 2000s but remains far less crowded than Silver Waterfall (Thac Bac), which sits right on the main road. Getting to Thac Tinh Yeu requires an actual walk through the forest β about 1.5 km from the ticket gate β which filters out most tour-bus day-trippers.
Why travelers go
The walk in is the point. You cross bamboo bridges, pass through sections of old-growth forest with ferns taller than you, and hear the falls long before you see them. The pool at the base is swimmable in warmer months (AprilβSeptember), though "warm" is relative at 1,200 meters elevation β expect water temperatures around 15β18Β°C.
For photographers, the light is best before 10 AM when sun cuts through the canopy at an angle. The mist from the cascade creates natural diffusion that flatters just about any lens.
Best time to visit
March to May is ideal: the forest is green from spring rains, water flow is strong but trails aren't dangerously slippery, and temperatures hover around 18β22Β°C. September to November is the second-best window β post-monsoon flow makes the falls dramatic, and rice terraces in the surrounding valleys turn gold.
Avoid June to August if you dislike leeches and mud. The trail becomes genuinely slippery, and flash flooding occasionally closes the path. December to February means thinner water flow and temperatures that can dip to 5Β°C β fine if you're already in Sapa (μ¬ν / ζ²ε / γ΅γ) for the cold-season atmosphere, but the falls themselves are less impressive.
Weekdays are always quieter. Weekend mornings (especially Saturday) bring domestic tour groups from Hanoi who arrive on the overnight train.
How to get there
From Sapa town, head northwest on the road toward Tram Ton Pass (the route to Lai Chau). Silver Waterfall is at km 9; keep going another 5 km past it. The entrance to Thac Tinh Yeu is signposted on the left.
By motorbike: Rent in Sapa for 150,000β200,000 VND/day. The road is paved and in decent condition, but the final stretch has some sharp curves. Budget 25 minutes one way.
By taxi or Grab: Around 120,000β150,000 VND one way from Sapa center. Arrange a return time with the driver β signal is spotty at the falls.
By tour: Most Sapa half-day tours bundle Silver Waterfall + Love Waterfall for 250,000β400,000 VND per person including transport and guide. You'll get less time at each stop.
Entrance fee: 70,000 VND for adults, 20,000 VND for children (as of early 2025). Paid at the gate.

What to do
The trail
From the ticket gate, a stone-and-wood path winds 1.5 km through the forest. Allow 20β30 minutes each way at a comfortable pace. There are rest shelters along the route. The final section descends steeply via stone steps β around 300 of them β to the base pool.
Swimming
The pool is shallow enough near the edges (knee to waist depth) to wade safely. Deeper toward the center. No lifeguard, no changing rooms β bring a towel and change behind the rocks like everyone else. Locals swim in shorts and t-shirts.
Photography
Bring a wide-angle lens or ultrawide phone setting β the falls are tall and the viewing area is close. A polarizing filter cuts glare on the wet rocks. Tripod useful for long exposures of the water, though you can brace against the railings.
Combine with Silver Waterfall and Tram Ton Pass
Silver Waterfall is on the same road, 5 km back toward Sapa, and takes 15 minutes to visit (it's roadside, no hike). Tram Ton Pass β Vietnam (λ² νΈλ¨ / θΆε / γγγγ )'s highest road pass at 1,900 meters β is another 3 km beyond Love Waterfall. Do all three in a morning loop.
Where to eat
There's no food inside the park beyond a drinks vendor near the gate selling water, corn-on-the-cob, and instant noodles. Eat before or after in Sapa town.
Back in Sapa, try "pho" with horse meat (a regional thing β the broth is darker and more mineral) at stalls along Thach Son street. "Com tam" doesn't really exist up here; instead look for "thang co", a Hmong organ hotpot served at the weekend market, or grilled stream fish with herbs at A Quynh on Muong Hoa street.
For vietnamese coffee with a view, the cafes along Ham Rong hill road overlook the valley and charge 35,000β50,000 VND per cup.
Where to stay
Sapa town is your base. Options range from 200,000 VND dorm beds to 3,000,000+ VND boutique rooms with valley views.
- Budget: Sapa Capsule Hotel or hostels along Dong Loi street β 200,000β350,000 VND.
- Mid-range: Sapa Clay House or Topas Ecolodge (the latter is outside town on a ridge, worth the splurge for sunrise views) β 800,000β1,500,000 VND.
- Homestays: Cat Cat or Ta Van villages offer Hmong and Dao homestays for 250,000β400,000 VND including dinner. Less convenient for the waterfall but better for cultural immersion.

Practical tips
- Wear shoes with grip. The stone steps near the base get wet from spray year-round. Flip-flops are a recipe for a bruised tailbone.
- Bring a light rain jacket even in dry season β mist from the falls soaks you at the bottom.
- The walk back UP those 300 steps is the part people forget about. Don't blow all your energy scrambling around the rocks at the base.
- Phone signal (Viettel) works at the gate but drops to nothing near the falls. Download offline maps before you leave Sapa.
- Litter is an ongoing problem. Pack out what you bring in.
Common mistakes
Skipping it for Silver Waterfall. Silver Waterfall is easier to access (roadside, no hike) but far less rewarding. It's loud, crowded, and you view it from a distance. Love Waterfall earns the effort.
Arriving after noon. Tour groups hit between 11 AM and 2 PM. Come at 8 AM when the gate opens and you'll likely have the base pool to yourself for 30 minutes.
Not budgeting enough time. The round trip including the walk, photos, and a swim takes 2β2.5 hours minimum. Don't try to squeeze it into a 45-minute stop.
Practical notes
Thac Tinh Yeu pairs naturally with a Sapa itinerary of 2β3 days. If you're spending time in Hanoi (νλ Έμ΄ / ζ²³ε / γγγ€) before heading north, the overnight sleeper train to Lao Cai station (from 500,000 VND for a soft berth) is still the classic way to arrive. From Lao Cai station, it's a 35 km minibus or taxi ride up to Sapa town.
