Getting to Ca Mau: an overview

Ca Mau is Vietnam (베트남 / 越南 / ベトナム)'s southernmost province, about 350 km from Saigon and 1,600 km from Hanoi. Most travelers come from Saigon; the journey is straightforward but involves long hours on the road or air. There's no train service to Ca Mau, so you're choosing between bus, motorbike, car rental, or flying.

From Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City)

Bus

Bus is the cheapest and most common option. Several companies run the Saigon (사이공 / 西贡 / サイゴン)–Ca Mau route daily. The journey takes 4–5 hours depending on traffic and stops. You'll leave from Ben Thanh Bus Station or Mien Tay Bus Station on the city's outskirts.

Cost: 150,000–250,000 VND per ticket (roughly $6–10 USD).

Time: 4.5–5 hours, often departing early morning (5–7 a.m.) or late afternoon (4–6 p.m.).

Operators to check: Phuong Trang (reliable, decent seats), Hoang Long, Sai Gon Coach. Book a day ahead online or at the station.

Pro tip: overnight buses exist but are rare and less comfortable than daytime runs. A morning bus gets you to Ca Mau by early afternoon.

Private car or ride-hailing

If you have a larger group or value comfort, grab a private driver through Grab Car or a local taxi service. Cost is around 800,000–1,200,000 VND ($32–48 USD) depending on car type and negotiation. You can split this with travel companions. Journey time is identical to the bus—4–5 hours—but you get flexibility and air conditioning.

Motorbike or self-drive

Rent a motorbike (150,000–250,000 VND/day) or a car (1,000,000+ VND/day) from Saigon rental shops. The route south is straightforward: take Highway 1 all the way down through Long An and Vinh Long provinces. Road conditions are reasonable; traffic thins once you leave the city sprawl. Riding takes 5–6 hours for a motorbike (you'll want to stop for lunch and stretch). A rental car is less tiring. Gas costs roughly 100,000 VND for a motorbike or 300,000 VND for a small car.

From Hanoi

Flying

This is the most practical option from Hanoi (하노이 / 河内 / ハノイ). Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet, and Bamboo Airways fly Hanoi to Ca Mau daily. Flight time is about 2.5 hours.

Cost: 1,500,000–3,500,000 VND ($60–140 USD) depending on how far in advance you book and which airline.

Time: 2.5 hours flight + 1.5–2 hours for airport procedures and transfers = roughly 6 hours door-to-door.

Ca Mau Airport (CAH) is about 10 km northwest of the city center. A taxi from the airport costs 150,000–200,000 VND; Grab is cheaper at 80,000–120,000 VND.

Bus

Overland bus from Hanoi to Ca Mau is possible but brutal: 24–30 hours depending on the route and company. Most buses take Highway 1 south, stopping overnight in Da Nang, Nha Trang, or Ho Chi Minh City (호치민시 / 胡志明市 / ホーチミン市). Cost ranges from 300,000–600,000 VND ($12–24 USD). Unless you're on a tight budget and have spare time, flying is worth the price difference.

From Da Nang or Central Vietnam

Via Saigon

The quickest way is to reach Saigon first (flight, bus, or train), then follow the Saigon–Ca Mau route above. Saigon is the hub; direct connections from Da Nang (다낭 / 岘港 / ダナン) to Ca Mau are rare and longer than routing through the capital.

Bus Hanoi–Saigon: 20–22 hours, around 400,000–700,000 VND. Flights Hanoi–Saigon: 2 hours, 1,200,000–2,500,000 VND.

If you're in Da Nang or Nha Trang (냐짱 / 芽庄 / ニャチャン), flying to Saigon is usually fastest and only marginally pricier than buses.

Where to stay in Ca Mau

Ca Mau city is the main base for exploring the province. Hotels cluster in the downtown core near Nguyen Hue and Ly Tu Trong streets. Budget guesthouses ("nha nghi") start at 200,000–300,000 VND/night; mid-range hotels (3-star, with air-con and hot water) run 400,000–800,000 VND. Higher-end options are limited; most travelers use Ca Mau as a one- or two-night stop before heading to U Minh Ha or nearby fishing villages.

For island and mangrove tours, stay in Ca Mau city; tour operators pick up from your hotel. If you want a more immersive Mekong Delta (메콩 델타 / 湄公河三角洲 / メコンデルタ) experience, consider staying in nearby Soc Trang or Bac Lieu provinces and making Ca Mau a day trip.

When to visit

November to February offers cooler, drier weather—ideal for boat tours through mangroves without intense midday heat. May to September is rainy and humid but fewer tourists, and prices drop. Avoid late September–early October if you're averse to typhoons, though Ca Mau's southern position makes it less exposed than central provinces.

Getting around Ca Mau

Once you arrive, rent a motorbike (150,000 VND/day) or hire a driver through your hotel. Most attractions—U Minh Ha mangrove forest, Dat Mui (the southernmost point), fishing villages—are day trips from the city. Taxis and Grab work in the city; prices are low. Tour agencies can arrange boat trips and guided tours, often including hotel pickup.

Practical notes

Book buses or flights 1–2 days ahead, especially on weekends. If traveling during Tet or major holidays, book earlier. Bring cash (most buses and smaller transport options don't take cards). The Saigon–Ca Mau route is safe and well-trodden; delays are usually minor and weather-related rather than serious incidents.
