Zaloはベトナムで圧倒的なシェアを誇るメッセージアプリです。ベトナムに到着する前にインストールしておかないと、ゲストハウスに送ったWhatsAppのメッセージがなぜ無視されるのか、初日から頭を抱えることになるでしょう。
Zaloはベトナムのテック企業VNGが運営しており、国内で7,500万人以上のアクティブユーザーを抱えています。ホテルの受付スタッフ、Sapaのホームステイのホスト、Hoi Anのツアーオペレーター、注文を受ける屋台の店主など、ベトナム人の大多数にとってZaloがデフォルトの連絡手段です。ベトナムの電話番号に紐付いており、WhatsAppとFacebook Messengerを掛け合わせたような機能で、無料の音声通話、グループチャット、SNSフィードなどが利用できます。
ゲストハウスが連絡先番号を掲載している場合、それはWhatsAppではなくZaloで連絡してほしいという意味だと考えて間違いありません。Ninh Binh（ニンビン）の家族経営の宿や、Ha Long Bayのボートツアー、Hoi Anの旧市街にある仕立て屋など、小規模な事業者の多くはWhatsAppを全くチェックしません。WhatsAppでメッセージを送って返信がない場合は、同じ番号でZaloを試してみてください。
WhatsAppが役立つのは、以下のような限定的かつ実用的な状況です。
中・高級ホテルに宿泊し、OTA（オンライン旅行代理店）経由で予約をするのであれば、WhatsAppをメインにしても問題ありません。しかし、現地の業者やドライバー、家族経営のゲストハウスと直接やり取りしようとすると、WhatsAppは不便なツールになります。

Zaloは無料でiOSとAndroidに対応しており、登録には電話番号が必要です。以下の2つの方法があります。
登録後は、Zaloの検索バーでホテルやツアー会社の電話番号を直接検索してみてください。ベトナムの番号を持つほとんどの事業者は、Zaloアカウントを紐付けています。
Mai ChauやHa Giang（ハーザン）でのホームステイ予約: メールやWhatsAppでは数日間返信がないこともあります。Zaloを試せば、数分で返信が来ることも珍しくありません。
専用車やバイクタクシーの手配: ドライバーはほぼ全員がZaloを使っています。アプリ内の地図機能を使って、ピックアップ場所を共有しましょう。
レストランの予約: HanoiやSaigon（サイゴン）の大型レストランはInstagramのDMやメールでも対応してくれることがありますが、中規模の地元店では、Zaloか電話が唯一の連絡手段です。
ウォーキングフードツアーや料理教室への参加: 小規模な運営者の多くは、顧客との連絡をZaloのグループチャットで行っています。

3つすべてインストールしておきましょう。無料ですし、容量もほとんど取りません。ただし、国際的なホテル以外で過ごす予定があるなら、Zaloを最優先してください。WhatsAppは旅先で出会う国際的な旅行者とのネットワーク用に、Telegramは数週間以上の滞在で外国人コミュニティの情報を得たい場合に役立ちます。
出発前にどれか一つだけ選ぶなら、迷わずZaloにしましょう。
実用的なルールとして、ベトナム人とのやり取りにはZaloを、海外の旅行者や高級ホテルとの連絡にはWhatsAppを、そして外国人コミュニティや長期滞在にはTelegramを使いましょう。ベトナムで連絡がつかないと悩む原因のほとんどは、間違ったプラットフォームを使っていることにあります。
