Nha Trang (๋์งฑ / ่ฝๅบ / ใใฃใใฃใณ) has a reputation problem. Walk two blocks from the beach and you'll hit menus priced for package tourists โ mediocre grilled prawns at 200,000 VND, beer at four times the local rate. Step another block back from that, though, and you're in a different city entirely. One where fishermen eat before sunrise and office workers grab lunch for 35,000 VND without thinking twice. That city is still there. You just have to know where to look.
Breakfast: 20,000โ40,000 VND
Banh Mi Phuong Trang โ Nguyen Thi Minh Khai
Nha Trang's "banh mi" scene is underrated. The stall on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai near the Phan Boi Chau intersection runs from around 6am and sells loaded baguettes โ pate, cha lua (Vietnamese sausage), pickled daikon, fresh coriander โ for 20,000โ25,000 VND. Get there before 8am or the good filling combinations start running low. This is breakfast, not a snack.
Banh Canh Chat โ Dam Market Area
Dam Market (Cho Dam) anchors a cluster of early-morning stalls that most tourists walk straight past. "Banh canh" โ thick tapioca noodles in a rich pork or crab broth โ is the thing to order here. A bowl with pork hock and a soft-boiled egg runs 35,000โ40,000 VND. It's heavier than you might expect at 7am, which is exactly the point if you're planning a long day.
Xoi โ Various Carts, Hoang Hoa Tham Street
"Xoi" (sticky rice) carts appear along Hoang Hoa Tham and surrounding streets before 8am and disappear by 9. A portion with mung bean paste, shredded pork floss, and a drizzle of scallion oil costs 15,000โ20,000 VND. Filling, fast, and you can eat it walking.
Lunch: 30,000โ50,000 VND
Bun Bo Hue โ Yersin Street
Nha Trang sits close enough to Hue that "bun bo Hue" โ the spicy lemongrass beef noodle soup โ is taken seriously here. Several no-sign shops on Yersin Street (around the 50โ70 block) serve proper bowls with pork knuckle, congealed blood cake, and shrimp paste broth for 40,000โ45,000 VND. The heat level is real. Ask for it nhe (mild) if you need to.
Com Tam Binh Dan โ Phan Chu Trinh Area
"Com tam" โ broken rice โ is technically a Saigon staple, but it's eaten all over Vietnam (๋ฒ ํธ๋จ / ่ถๅ / ใใใใ ) and Nha Trang has its own version. Look for the "binh dan" (everyday, no-frills) com tam shops along Phan Chu Trinh. A plate with grilled pork, a fried egg, pickled vegetables, and fish sauce dipping broth comes out at 35,000โ45,000 VND. Lunch crowds peak between 11:30am and 1pm; show up at 11 if you want a table.
Mi Quang โ Local Shops Near Nha Trang Cathedral
The streets around Nha Trang Cathedral (Nha Tho Nui Nha Trang on Thai Nguyen Street) have a quiet concentration of local lunch spots. "Mi quang" โ the turmeric-tinted noodle dish from Quang Nam โ turns up here with shrimp and pork in a small, almost broth-free bowl topped with crushed peanuts and sesame rice crackers. Around 40,000 VND. It's not the definitive version you'd get in Da Nang or Hoi An (ํธ์ด์ / ไผๅฎ / ใใคใขใณ), but it's good and the price is right.

Dinner: 40,000โ50,000 VND
Bun Rieu โ Evening Stalls, Cho Xom Moi Market
Cho Xom Moi (the market on Phan Boi Chau) comes alive in the early evening with stalls selling "bun rieu (๋ถ์ง์์ฐ / ่น่็ฑณ็ฒๆฑค / ใใณใชใฅใฆ)" โ a tomato and crab paste noodle soup with tofu and rice vermicelli. It's tangy, a little funky, and entirely satisfying for 40,000โ45,000 VND. Eat at the plastic stools out front and watch the market wind down.
Goi Cuon and Cha Gio at Quan Nhau Streets
Nha Trang's drinking culture means "quan nhau" (drinking food spots) appear in the evening with snack-and-share plates priced cheaply to move volume. "Goi cuon (๊ณ ์ด๊พธ์จ / ่ถๅๆฅๅท / ใดใคใฏใชใณ)" (fresh spring rolls) and "cha gio" (fried spring rolls) come in at 10,000โ15,000 VND per piece, which sounds like snacks but three or four of each is a meal. Streets around Hung Vuong in the evenings are a good place to wander and pick a busy table.
Banh Xeo โ Tran Phu Side Streets
Get off Tran Phu (the beachfront road) by one or two blocks and the prices drop significantly. "Banh xeo (๋ฐ์ธ์ค / ่ถๅ็ ้ฅผ / ใใคใณใปใช)" โ the sizzling crepe stuffed with shrimp, pork belly, and bean sprouts โ is sold at small shops inland from the tourist drag for 40,000โ50,000 VND a full crepe. Wrap pieces in lettuce and herbs, dip in nuoc cham, and you have a dinner that takes some effort to finish.

What to Skip
Avoid anything with photos laminated on the menu within sight of the beach. The food isn't necessarily bad, but you'll pay 80,000โ150,000 VND for the same bowl that costs 40,000 VND two streets back. Night markets on Tran Phu are scenic but priced accordingly โ fine for a beer, not the right call for a full meal on a budget.
Practical Notes
Most of these spots are cash only; carry small bills (10,000 and 20,000 VND denominations help). Nha Trang's cheap lunch window is strict โ many local places close by 2pm and don't reopen for dinner. If you're arriving hungry mid-afternoon, the Cho Dam market area is your most reliable fallback.
