Sun World Ha Long is the largest amusement complex in northeast Vietnam (베트남 / 越南 / ベトナム), sprawling across the top of Ba Deo hill and down to Ha Long Bay's waterfront. Whether you're killing a day before or after a bay cruise, or you've got kids who need something besides limestone karsts, this place fills a specific gap in the Quang Ninh itinerary.
What it is and how it got here
Opened in stages from 2014 onward by the Sun Group (the same company behind Da Nang's Golden Bridge), Sun World Ha Long combines a hilltop amusement park, a coastal boardwalk zone, a water park, and the Queen Cable Car connecting them. The complex sits right in Bai Chay Ward, Ha Long City — not out in the sticks, but smack in the middle of the tourist strip. The cable car crosses a stretch of the bay itself, which is genuinely the highlight for most adults. At 2 km, it held the record for longest cabin cable car over sea in Vietnam when it opened.
The park has grown steadily. A Japanese garden, a wax museum, and a typhoon simulator have all been bolted on over the years. It's not Disneyland, but it's well-maintained by Vietnamese standards and considerably more polished than the aging theme parks you find in other provinces.
Why travelers go
Three reasons, mostly:
- The cable car. The ride from the coastal station to the hilltop takes about 15 minutes. You get a slow, wide-angle view of Ha Long Bay (하롱베이 / 下龙湾 / ハロン湾) that's different from what you see at water level on a cruise — rooftops, the bridge, clusters of karsts fading into haze. On a clear day, it's worth the ticket alone.
- A change of pace. If you've done two days on Ha Long Bay and need something for the afternoon, this is the obvious option. Families with children under 12 especially.
- The water park. Typhoon Water Park (open roughly April through September) is large, reasonably clean, and a legit way to spend a hot afternoon.
Best time to visit
March through May and September through November — shoulder months when it's warm enough for the water park (at least the tail ends) but you dodge the domestic holiday crush. Summer (June–August) is peak season; weekends in July see the kind of queues that eat two hours before you touch a ride. December through February is cool and often foggy, which kills the cable car views entirely.
If you're visiting on a weekend in summer, arrive when gates open at 8:30 AM. By 11:00 AM the queues for the Dragon ride and the alpine coaster are 30–45 minutes.
How to get there from Hanoi
Ha Long City is roughly 160 km east of Hanoi.
- Bus: Comfortable limousine buses run from My Dinh and Gia Lam stations. Expect 3.5–4 hours and fares around 150,000–250,000 VND one way depending on the operator. Kumho Viet Thanh and Phuc Xuyen are reliable names.
- Private car/taxi: About 2.5–3 hours on the Ha Long Expressway. A one-way Grab or private transfer runs 1,200,000–1,500,000 VND.
- From Hai Phong: If you're coming via Cat Ba, the route through Hai Phong is about 70 km / 1.5 hours by bus or car.
Once in Ha Long City, the park is on Ha Long Road in Bai Chay — every taxi driver knows it. A cab from Ha Long bus station costs around 60,000–80,000 VND.

What to do inside
Ride the Queen Cable Car
This is non-negotiable. The two-line system connects the beach zone to the hilltop park. Go early or late in the day for the best light and shortest wait. The glass-floor cabins cost the same as regular ones — request one if the queue isn't insane.
Hit the hilltop rides
The hilltop zone has a solid alpine coaster (fast, fun, not just for kids), a free-fall tower, and a handful of spinning rides. The Mystic Mountain zone added a few thrill rides in recent years. None of it is world-class, but the alpine coaster with bay views is legitimately enjoyable.
Walk the Japanese Garden
Surprisingly well done. Koi ponds, manicured paths, a pagoda replica. It's a quiet 20-minute walk that works as a breather between rides.
Typhoon Water Park (seasonal)
A separate ticket or combo ticket. Wave pool, lazy river, a handful of slides including a funnel slide that's more intense than it looks. Lockers are 50,000 VND. Bring your own towel — rental towels are thin.
Sun Wheel
The large Ferris wheel on the hilltop. At 215 meters above sea level, the top of the rotation gives you the widest panorama available in Ha Long City. Best at sunset if the timing works.
Where to eat nearby
The park has food courts — predictably overpriced and average. Better to eat outside.
- "Cha muc" (squid cake) is Quang Ninh's signature dish. Crispy outside, chewy inside, served with sweet fish sauce. Stalls along Ha Long Road in Bai Chay sell plates for 60,000–100,000 VND. Bien Nho and Cua Vang restaurants on Vuon Dao street are decent sit-down options.
- "Bun rieu" (crab noodle soup) shows up at morning stalls near Bai Chay market — a good breakfast before you hit the park.
Where to stay
Bai Chay Ward has the densest hotel strip in Ha Long City. Options range widely:
- Budget: Mini-hotels and hostels along Ha Long Road, 250,000–500,000 VND per night. Basic but clean.
- Mid-range: 3-star hotels like Ha Long Park, Novotel Ha Long Bay, or Mithrin Hotel, 800,000–1,500,000 VND. Pool access, breakfast included.
- Splurge: FLC Ha Long or Vinpearl Resort, 2,500,000–5,000,000 VND. Resort vibes, bay-view rooms.
Staying in Bai Chay puts you within a 10-minute taxi of the park entrance.

Practical tips locals would tell you
- Buy combo tickets online. The park's website and Klook both sell combo passes (cable car + rides + water park) for 15–20% less than the gate price. A full combo runs around 600,000–700,000 VND for adults.
- Bring sunscreen and a hat. The hilltop has minimal shade. The queue areas bake in the afternoon.
- Wear shoes you can walk in. The hilltop park involves a surprising amount of uphill walking between zones.
- Check the fog. In winter months (December–February), call your hotel or check webcams before buying cable car tickets. Thick fog rolls in fast, and you'll see nothing from the cabin.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Going on a summer weekend without an early start. You'll spend more time in queues than on rides.
- Skipping the cable car to save money. The cable car IS the experience. The hilltop rides are a bonus.
- Eating inside the park. Prices are 2–3x what you'd pay on the street for worse food. Eat before or after.
- Trying to combine this with a Ha Long Bay cruise on the same day. Most cruises return by 12:00–13:00. You can technically squeeze in the park afterward, but you'll be rushed and tired. Give it its own half-day or full day.
Practical notes
Sun World Ha Long works best as a half-day or full-day addition to a broader Ha Long Bay trip. Pair it with a morning at Bai Tho Mountain or an evening along the Bai Chay boardwalk. If you're traveling with kids, it's one of the better family-friendly stops in northern Vietnam outside of Hanoi (하노이 / 河内 / ハノイ).
