What it is
Sun World Ha Long Complex — locally called Cong Vien Dai Duong Ha Long (Ha Long Ocean Park) — is a large-scale amusement and marine park sitting on the Ba Deo hill area in Ha Long city, Quang Ninh province. It opened in 2014 and has expanded steadily since, now covering roughly 214 hectares split between two main zones: an outdoor amusement park with a beach area on one side, and Typhoon Water Park plus an indoor games zone on the other. A cable car connects the two across a bay inlet, and that ride alone pulls in visitors who have zero interest in roller coasters.
The park is operated by Sun Group, the same company behind the Golden Bridge in Da Nang and the Fansipan cable car in Sapa. Whatever you think of corporate theme parks, the infrastructure here is solid — the place doesn't feel half-finished like some Vietnamese amusement parks can.
Why travelers go
Most people visiting Quang Ninh are there for Ha Long Bay. The ocean park works as a solid contrast day — especially if you're traveling with kids, or if weather cancels your bay cruise, or if you simply want something to do before or after your boat trip. The aquarium (called the Undersea World) is one of the larger ones in northern Vietnam, and the Queen Cable Car gives you a wide aerial view of Ha Long Bay from an angle most tourists don't see. It's not a replacement for a cruise, but it complements one well.
For families, it's a no-brainer addition. For couples or solo travelers, a half-day is usually enough to hit the highlights without feeling like you're grinding through rides.
Best time to visit
Quang Ninh has two real seasons that matter: hot and wet (May–September) and cool and dry (October–April).
April to June is the sweet spot. Warm enough for the water park and outdoor rides, but you avoid the worst of the July–August heat and the September rain. Weekdays in May are particularly quiet — Vietnamese school holidays haven't started yet and domestic tour groups thin out.
October to December works well for the amusement park side (pleasant 20–25°C days), though the water park loses its appeal when temperatures drop.
Avoid Vietnamese public holidays — especially the days around Tet, April 30th (Reunification Day), and September 2nd. The park gets packed, queue times triple, and ticket prices sometimes jump.
How to get there
From Hanoi (하노이 / 河内 / ハノイ), you have three main options:
- Bus: Regular coaches from My Dinh or Gia Lam bus stations to Ha Long city. Around 4 hours, 120,000–180,000 VND depending on the operator. Kumho Viet Thanh and Phuc Xuyen are reliable lines.
- Private car/taxi: About 160 km via the Ha Long–Hai Phong expressway. Takes roughly 2.5 hours. A Grab car runs around 1,200,000–1,500,000 VND one way.
- Seaplane (seasonal): Hai Au Aviation sometimes runs Hanoi–Ha Long seaplane flights. Roughly 45 minutes, around 2,500,000 VND per person. More of a splurge than practical transport.
Once in Ha Long city, the park is about 5 km southwest of Bai Chay tourist area. A local taxi from most Ha Long hotels costs 50,000–80,000 VND.

What to do
Queen Cable Car
The 2 km cable car ride crosses Cua Luc Bay and climbs Ba Deo hill. On clear days the view stretches across Ha Long Bay (하롱베이 / 下龙湾 / ハロン湾)'s limestone karsts. It's included in most combo tickets and honestly the single best thing in the park — even if you skip every ride, do this.
Undersea World
A walk-through aquarium with a 128-meter tunnel. It houses around 300 species: reef sharks, rays, sea turtles, and a decent collection of Mekong River fish. It's not world-class by Singapore or Osaka standards, but for Vietnam it's well-maintained. Budget 45–60 minutes.
Typhoon Water Park
Open seasonally (roughly May through September). Lazy river, wave pool, a handful of tube slides, and a tornado funnel ride that's legitimately intense. Bring your own towel — rental towels cost 50,000 VND and they're thin.
Mystic Mountain zone
The outdoor amusement park area on the hilltop has a decent selection: a dragon coaster, drop tower, spinning rides, and a few family-friendly options. Lines are short on weekdays. Nothing here will rival a major international theme park, but it's fun, well-run, and the hilltop setting makes even the simpler rides more interesting.
Sun Wheel
A 215-meter-diameter observation wheel — one of the tallest in Southeast Asia. Best at dusk when you catch the bay transitioning to evening light. Each cabin fits 6 people; the full rotation takes about 20 minutes.
Where to eat nearby
The park has its own food courts (predictably overpriced, averaging 80,000–150,000 VND for a basic meal), but you're better off eating outside. The Bai Chay strip, 10 minutes by taxi, has more variety.
"Cha muc" — grilled squid cake — is Ha Long's signature dish and worth tracking down. Look for small local places along Vuon Dao Street rather than the big seafood restaurants fronting the tourist road; you'll pay 60,000–80,000 VND per portion instead of double that. Pair it with "bun" (rice vermicelli) and dipping sauce.
For something more filling, most local restaurants do solid plates of "com tam (껌땀 / 碎米饭 / コムタム)" with grilled pork, or bowls of "pho" that lean toward the Hanoi style — clear broth, less sweetness than what you'd find in Saigon.
Where to stay
Ha Long city has accommodation across every budget:
- Budget: Guesthouses and hostels near Bai Chay Beach, 200,000–400,000 VND/night. Basic but functional.
- Mid-range: 3-star hotels along Ha Long Road, 500,000–900,000 VND/night. Muong Thanh Ha Long and Novotel Ha Long are consistent options.
- Upscale: FLC Ha Long or Wyndham Legend Ha Long, 1,500,000–3,000,000 VND/night. Both have bay views and pools.
If you're combining the park with a Ha Long Bay cruise, many travelers stay one night in Ha Long city (for the park) and then do an overnight boat the next day.

Practical tips locals would tell you
- Buy combo tickets online through the Sun World website or Klook. Walk-up prices are higher, and online tickets often bundle the cable car, aquarium, and rides. A full combo runs around 500,000–600,000 VND for adults, 350,000 VND for children.
- Arrive by 9 AM. Tour buses from Hanoi start arriving around 10:30. That first 90 minutes with short lines makes a real difference.
- Wear proper shoes. The hill sections involve stairs and slopes. Flip-flops are fine for the water park, not for the amusement park side.
- Sunscreen is non-negotiable from April to September. Shade is limited in the outdoor zones.
- Bring a light rain jacket if visiting June–August. Afternoon showers roll in fast, rides pause temporarily, and the wait under a metal awning isn't fun.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to do the park and a bay cruise in the same day. It doesn't work well. Give the park its own half-day or full day.
- Skipping the cable car to save money. The cable car is the highlight. If you buy a ticket that doesn't include it, you'll regret it standing at the base watching cabins glide overhead.
- Eating lunch inside the park at peak hour. The food courts are overpriced and jammed between 11:30 and 1 PM. Eat early, eat late, or eat outside.
- Not checking the water park's operating season. Showing up in December expecting slides is a disappointment. Confirm dates on Sun World's site before planning around it.
Practical notes
Cong Vien Dai Duong Ha Long is a comfortable day trip from Hanoi or a solid add-on if you're already in Quang Ninh for Ha Long Bay. It works best when you treat it as a half-day complement to your bay experience, not a destination on its own. Check the Sun World site for current ticket bundles — pricing and included attractions shift seasonally.
