ベトナムに到着したら最初に行うべきことの一つが、現地SIMカードの購入です。モバイルデータ通信は安価で、通信環境も概ね良好です。地図アプリや配車アプリのGrab、その場での宿泊予約などに欠かせません。しかし、Viettel、Vinaphone、Mobifoneという3つのキャリアのうち、どれを買うべきかという問いは簡単ではありません。
結論から言うと、どこに行くかによって決まります。
Viettelはベトナムで加入者数、そして何よりインフラの普及率において最大のキャリアです。Ha Giang、Sapa、Phong Nhaの奥地など、主要幹線道路から外れた場所へ行くなら、Viettel一択です。他の2社が圏外になるような山道や渓谷、地方の町でも電波をカバーしています。
北部で人気の高いHa Giang loopを旅する旅行者は、VinaphoneやMobifoneが2Gや圏外になる場所でも、Viettelなら4Gがつながると口を揃えます。Da Lat周辺の高原地帯や、Ha Tienに近いメコンデルタの端でも同様です。
ただし、旅行者向けのカスタマーサービスは他社より手薄で、地方でチャージする際にブランドショップを探す手間がかかる場合があります。
Mobifoneは、Hanoi、Saigon、Da Nang、Hue、Hoi Anといった人口密度の高い都市部で最も優れたパフォーマンスを発揮します。主要都市を巡る標準的な2週間の旅行であれば、Mobifoneの4G速度はViettelに匹敵し、建物内ではより速いこともあります。
また、Mobifoneは旅行者向けのSIMパッケージが充実しており、空港カウンターでは英語対応のスタッフが常駐し、パスポートスキャンで簡単にアクティベートできるため、初めてのベトナム旅行で手間を省きたい人には最適です。
Vinaphoneはその中間に位置します。Mobifoneよりも地方に強く、Viettelよりは極端な僻地でわずかに劣るものの、都市部での速度は遜色ありません。都市と、Ninh Binh、Hoi Anの郊外、Cat Ba島といった地方都市を組み合わせて旅するなら、賢い選択肢です。
また、近隣諸国から移動してきて、そのまま同じ番号を使い続けたい場合、国際ローミングの信頼性が高い傾向にあります（ただし、これは多くの旅行者にとっては限定的なメリットです）。
料金は頻繁に変動しますが、2024年後半時点での旅行者向けSIMの相場は以下の通りです。

3社とも4G LTEを提供しています。5Gはベトナムではまだ都市部の一部に限られており、旅行者向けの本格的な5Gパッケージはまだ一般的ではありません。
重要な注意点として、無制限プランといっても完全に無制限ではありません。各社とも、1日の高速通信上限を超えると2G相当の速度（128〜256 kbps）に制限されます。地図やメッセージのやり取りには問題ありませんが、ビデオ通話は厳しくなります。

Noi Bai（Hanoi）、Tan Son Nhat（Saigon）、Da Nangの各国際空港には、3社のカウンターがあります。到着ロビー内にあり、特にViettelとMobifoneは看板も大きく見つけやすいです。Vinaphoneのカウンターは小さく、デスクのみの場合もあります。
空港価格は市中価格より20,000〜50,000 VNDほど高いですが、スタッフが登録からSIMの挿入、動作確認まで行ってくれるため、到着が遅い場合や確実に設定を済ませたい場合には価値があります。
パスポートを必ず持参してください。SIMの登録は義務であり、パスポート番号と紐付けられます。パスポートがないとSIMは発行されません。
空港やコンビニではなく、各キャリアのブランドショップで購入すると、パッケージの選択肢が多く、料金も安くなります。Hanoiでは、Dinh Tien Hoang通りやDong Xuan市場近くの旧市街にあるViettelの旗艦店が見つけやすいでしょう。Saigonでは、1区内に各社の店舗が複数あります。
コンビニ（Circle K、Winmart、FamilyMart）でもSIMやチャージカードは売っていますが、登録がQRコード経由で複雑な場合があります。初めてベトナムでSIMを買うなら、ブランドショップに行くのが無難です。

Hanoi、Hue、Da Nang、Hoi An、Saigonを巡る一般的な南北縦断ルートであれば、どのキャリアを選んでも問題ありません。しかし、Ha Giangへ向かう場合や、Phong Nhaの洞窟の奥深く、あるいは北部の農村部へ行く予定があるなら、迷わずViettelを選んでください。旅行中にSIMを入れ替えるのは簡単で安価（新しいSIMは20,000〜50,000 VND程度）なので、まずは都市部で使い、山へ行く前にViettelのSIMを買い足すのも一つの手です。
