Bac Kan sits in the northeast limestone plateau, about 160 km from Hanoi. It's not a quick tourist circuit destination—there's no airport, limited train service, and roads wind through forest. Most travelers reach it by bus or private motorbike from Hanoi, and that's really your best bet.
From Hanoi (the most common route)
Hanoi (하노이 / 河内 / ハノイ) to Bac Kan is 160 km and takes 4–5 hours depending on traffic and which road you take. This is your main gateway.
By minibus / [sleeper bus](/posts/vietnam (베트남 / 越南 / ベトナム)-sleeper-bus-guide)
The easiest option for solo travelers or groups. Minibuses depart from Hanoi's Giap Bat Station (southern outskirts) roughly every 2–3 hours, 06:00–15:00. The ride costs 120,000–180,000 VND one-way depending on the operator and whether you want a sleeper berth. A sleeper bus with a flat bed runs about 180,000 VND; standard seated minibus is 120,000–150,000 VND. Journey time is 4.5–5.5 hours, often with a bathroom stop halfway.
The road is Highway 3, which gets increasingly mountainous as you head northeast. Sections are well-maintained; some stretches are rougher. Minibuses are frequent enough that you can usually show up at Giap Bat, grab a ticket, and leave within 2 hours. Overnight sleeper buses are less common on this route but do run—ask at the station.
By private car / taxi
If you're traveling in a small group and want flexibility, hire a car + driver from Hanoi for the day. Costs run 3–4 million VND (roughly USD 125–170) for a round trip, or 1.5–2 million VND one-way. Drivers know the road well; you can stop for coffee, photos, or detours without losing time. This is useful if you want to combine Bac Kan with nearby attractions like Bao Lac district or Tam Coc on the return.
By motorbike (Ha Noi — Bac Kan)
Riders often do this as a day trip or overnight. It's a scenic ride through rural valleys and forest. Highway 3 is well-marked and busier than side roads, so navigation is straightforward. Fuel cost is negligible (maybe 50,000–80,000 VND each way). The route is manageable for intermediate riders; the road has some tight curves but isn't treacherous. Plan 5–6 hours if you ride at a comfortable pace and stop for snacks. Rent a motorbike in Hanoi Old Quarter for 100,000–150,000 VND per day.
From Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City)
Bac Kan is not a natural extension of a southern Vietnam itinerary. The distance is roughly 1,500 km, requiring a full day or overnight of travel.
By air + ground
Fly Saigon to Hanoi (2 hours, frequent, 500,000–2,000,000 VND depending on timing and airline), then take a minibus from Hanoi to Bac Kan (4.5 hours, 120,000–180,000 VND). Total time: 6–8 hours including airport waits. Cost: roughly 700,000–2.5 million VND. This is the most practical if you're short on time.
By overnight sleeper bus (Saigon (사이공 / 西贡 / サイゴン) — Bac Kan)
Mibus and Futa Coach run Saigon–Hanoi overnight buses (14–16 hours, 300,000–600,000 VND), and some continue to Bac Kan or connect to a morning Hanoi–Bac Kan service. It's exhausting and not recommended unless budget is the only constraint. Total time: 20+ hours with transfers.
From Da Nang
Da Nang to Bac Kan is roughly 900 km, again not a practical add-on to a central Vietnam coastal trip.
Fly Da Nang (다낭 / 岘港 / ダナン) to Hanoi (2 hours, daily flights, 500,000–1,500,000 VND), then minibus Hanoi–Bac Kan (4.5 hours, 120,000–180,000 VND). Total: 6–7 hours, ~1–2 million VND. Your best bet if you must visit Bac Kan from the central coast.

Where to base yourself
Bac Kan City (the provincial capital)
Small, quiet, with a handful of guesthouses and a market. Accommodation is basic: guesthouses like Thao Lam or Bac Kan Tourist lodge run 200,000–400,000 VND per night for a clean double. Restaurants cluster near the market and along Vo Nguyen Giap Street. There's a petrol station, a few shops, and minimal nightlife—which is the whole appeal. This is where buses arrive and where you'd organize onward transport to Ba Be Lake or Bao Lac.
Ba Be Lake (40 km from Bac Kan City)
More scenic and popular with trekkers and nature tourists. Several homestays and eco-lodges operate around the lake: Nha Nghi Ba Be, Ba Be Homestay, and Thang Hen Lake Lodge offer rooms and meals for 300,000–600,000 VND per person, often including food. The lake is Vietnam's largest freshwater lake and surrounded by karst and forest—much quieter than Hanoi.
To reach Ba Be from Bac Kan City, take a shared taxi or motorbike taxi from the market (about 80,000–120,000 VND, 1.5 hours). Alternatively, arrange transport through your accommodation before you arrive.

Train option (limited)
There is a train station in Bac Kan, but service is irregular and mostly used by locals. Check with Vietnam Railways before booking; frequencies and timetables change. Most travelers skip this entirely.
Practical notes
Bac Kan rewards slow travel. Plan 2–3 days if you want to trek to Ba Be Lake or visit minority villages; one day is possible if you're just passing through Bac Kan City. The minibus from Hanoi is reliable and cheap—book a day ahead if you're traveling on a weekend. Bring cash (VND); ATMs exist in Bac Kan City but are not abundant elsewhere. Highway 3 is safe and well-traveled; ride or drive during daylight if possible.
